LEFT: An image from Sannit’s monograph of one of her larger installation pieces, Citadel.
I had the pleasure of visiting Patricia in her Phoenix home in late 2018. I have always been a fan of her work, ever since seeing the large solo installation in Phoenix in 2011 in Tempe, curated by Peter Held.
Referencing antiquity and bridging history with the contemporary practice of installation mesh seamlessly in Sannit’s work. While this is idea is nothing new in the small and often uninventive world of contemporary ceramic art, I find Sannit’s approach to be so beautifully crafted that it transcends easily into the realm of fine art. There are so many directions you can take the visual allegories present: large vs small / one vs many; rugged markmaking with simple forms; color vs monochrome; data vs meaning; simplicity and complexity.
It’s quite visually overwhelming but in the best possible way.
